Some information about India

India is the seventh largest country in the world by land area, occupying 3.287 million square kilometres. It measures 2,933 kilometres from east to west and 3,214 kilometres from north to south. The famous Himalaya mountain range lies on the north. It has seven land bordering countries that are Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. It shares maritime border with Sri Lanka, Thailand, Maldives and Indonesia. As per a report from the Ministry of Environment,forest and tree cover is about 24.56% of the total geographical area of the country. The climate is very diverse from the Glaciers in the North to rain forest in the south-west. India is divided in 28 states and eight union territories. All of the 28 states have their own government and the 8 union territories are under by the central government but have in some cases own parliament and state government. The Constitution of India came into force in 1950, and provides that the Prime Minister will be elected by one of the parliaments chambers, Lok Sabha (composed of representatives of the people chosen by direct election on the basis of the adult suffrage) elected and serve as the Head of Government. India also has a President who acts as the Head of State in a largely ceremonial capacity. India's official language is Hindi. Besides Hindi English has a special status and 22 regional languages are recognized in the constitution. The Indian currency is known as the Indian Rupee (INR) To talk of diversity India has about 5,000 different groups of people who speaks 400 languages using 38 different alphabets.

The country’s capital is New Delhi and other major cities for business include Bangalore (referred to officially as Bengaluru), Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad besides the fact that all state capitals also are important.

Religion is important for many Indian's cultural beliefs and practices. India is the birthplace of four religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. Almost 1.03 billion Indians, or 80 per cent of the population, are Hindus. Hindus worship many different Gods and India has about 2 million Hindu temples,while just under 15 per cent are Muslims, making India home to the world’s third largest Muslim population. India has more than 300,000 active mosques this outnumbers any other country in the world, even the Muslim countries.

India’s space program is among the top five space programs in the world despite having budget constraints. Over 4700 daily newspapers in more than 300 languages are produced in India.

India’s road network is the world’s second largest with 4,865,000 km of roads constructed. (2014). Indian railway employs more than a million people, making it the largest employers in the world. Indian Railways has world’s 4th longest rail network.

Yoga originated from India and is still in existence for over 5000 years. The Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World is in the city of Agra in India.

India has a BNP of 2,623 billion USD. Traditionally India has a huge agricultural sector, textile industry, handicrafts, and many others. India has also become a main player in Call Centres and Software developments plus has become a centre for research – primely in the medical field. Recently India has also become a strong player in car manufacturing and car parts. Interestingly some Indian people live among isolated tribes at the same time as others are involved in the space program.
